A doctor referral is NOT required, but always welcome.
Those with a chronic health condition may like to ask their doctor for a Medicare Allied Health Referral (aka EPC plan). If eligible Medicare will then rebate $61.80, to a maximum of 5 visits per calendar year (Jan to Dec). This is useful for those who do not have private health insurance with extras cover for a dietitian.
Extra medicare visits (maximum 10-20 a year) are available for Indigenous Australians and those living with an eating disorder diagnosed by their doctor, using an EDE questionnaire as per Medicare requirements.
